Dirty Birds’ Pepperoni Roll Contest

By Candace Nelson - 11:32 AM

The local minor league baseball team, the Dirty Birds, had a special night where they were playing as the “Pepperoni Rolls.”
I was already in as soon as I heard that. But then, I found out there was also a pepperoni roll contest? Oh, yes. I am in there like swimwear.
I was luckily able to judge the contest, and there were some solid competitors. Some of my favorites include The Bucket, which has a deep-fried pepperoni roll filled with melty cheese, drizzled with butter and topped with Parmesan. And served with marinara.
Another favorite is Zul’s, which has small bits of pepperoni intermixed with tons of cheese. This is the not the first time I’ve had either of these, and they continue to hold up every time.
Some of the other competitors include:

Fitzwater's Rockin Rolls
Mardi Gras casino
G&G Heritage Farm
Abruzzi
Sugar Pie Bakery
None of the rolls were bad, but it's certainly hard to beat a hot pepperoni roll oozing with cheese.
The judges' favorite went to The Bucket.
And, people's choice also went to The Bucket. The runner up was the Fitzwater's pepperoni roll, which is the only homestyle pepperoni roll because the others are all professional.
I think I've had enough pepperoni rolls to last me a lifetime, but it didn't stop me from getting a couple from The Bucket and Zul's to go.
What do you look for in a pepperoni roll?
