Sergio's Cucina Italiana & Steaks is a newer restaurant in Hurricane that I visited with two of my closest friends, Elena and Amanda, when it first opened.

This restaurant is one of several from the namesake owner, who also owns the Guadalajara restaurants. But, the specialty for this location is specifically Italian fare and steaks. And I had set my sights on Italian.

I started with a minestrone soup, which I wasn't crazy about. But the warm breadsticks with parmesan were fluffy and buttery.

I built my own trio with the following:
Meat lasagna - layers of hearty ground beef, creamy ricotta, and Parmesan cheese, all nestled between sheets of pasta and smothered in rich tomato sauce and baked to perfection.
Chicken parmesan - breaded chicken cutlet served over a bed of spaghetti pasta and topped with rich marinara sauce.
Fettuccine rosa - A delectable blend of marinara and house-made Alfredo sauce tossed with fettuccine, served with tender chicken.

The meal was so comforting and filling - it's impossible not to enjoy it. The flavors were not anything I haven't had before, but they were tasty. Carbs are my love language.

I think I'm at the peak of my pizza fandom. Detroit-style, New York-style, artisan, make-your-own, etc. Fuel Counter allows me to combine a few of those options.

I visited the express location in Hurricane that recently shuttered and created my own pizza with fresh mozzarella, ricotta, arugula, beets, pears, prosciutto and a balsamic glaze. I'm no chef, but man did I put together a tasty pie.

I loved the different components and how they played together. The sweet balanced the salty. The tang balanced the savory. I may have went a touch overboard with too many toppings - making for a pretty hefty slice. But worth it.

Wok'd Asian Grill in Hurricane focuses on build-your-own Asian fusion food in a fast-casual environment.

"The name Wok'd stems from the name wok which is a metal cook pan with a convex bottom. The idea of this is to allow the customer to pick and choose you own ingredients to have a variety in what you want. Once you pick and choose what you want in your bowl it is then wok'd right in front of you and topped with the sauce of your choice and served to go or dine in. The vision we sought out to bring the Teays valley and Hurricane area is new fast casual asian fusion restaurant for everyone."

There are a few different suggested options, including bibimbap, teriyaki chicken, and beef noodle soup. But the most fun for me was making my own.

Pick a Base (1 base)
White rice, Fried rice, Sweet potato noodles, Lo mein, Salad mix
Pick a protein (1 protein)
Beef, Chicken, Spicy Chicken, Tofu
Pick a Topping (up to 6 toppings)
Cucumber, Carrot, Egg, Corn, Pineapple, Kimchi, Purple Cabbage, Kale, Potato, Green Peppers
Sauce it up (1 sauce)
Tangy teriyaki, Korean chili, Korean mild, Sesame ginger, Yum yum

I did white rice, fried chicken and General Tso sauce. For a quick service meal, it was decent. If it had just been cooked-to-order, the texture may have been firmer and more satisfying. I still enjoyed the sweet and tangy flavor and the fluffy rice.

As a side, I had the char siu buns - red roasted pork buns marinated in a char siu sauce. Fluffy, toothsome bite with a sweet-ish filling. Chewy bits here and there, though.

Finally, a brown sugar boba tea that was not too sweet. Very milky and a good amount of tapioca balls. A nice complement to the meal.

Putnam Provisions Company is a coffee shop and artisan shop in a coworking space. "The concept behind Putnam Provisions is to provide a place not only to get DRIP Coffee, but also a store front for Good Horse Scents, LLC products. In addition, provide a place for you to shop from local artisans, local food producers and local value-added products," reads the website.

They offer coffee, cold brew, espresso, hot chocolates, lattes, mochas, teas, fruit smoothies, and other specialty drinks offered hot, iced, or frozen. Plus avocado toast, chicken salad sandwiches and bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato sandwiches.

I did a little shopping and got some LeJa Produce jam. This local farm produces lettuce, strawberies, blackberries, blueberries and has raised beds and high tunnels.

Freeze dried candy is all the rage right now, and I picked these adorable little ice cream cones up from Feather Ridge Farm.

I enjoyed an egg salad sandwich made with farm-fresh eggs. It was small - like half a sandwich. But it was tasty.

Twisted Grille is a local business that has been serving burgers, nachos and fries via brick-and-mortar and food truck. When I saw their food truck, I already knew I wanted to order the Route 60 Nachos. It is tortilla chips topped with pulled pork, white queso cheese, and barbecue sauce. I do love a good nacho, and these were surprisingly simple. I think a pickled jalapeno would add a bit ot fresh, sweet and spice to each bite.

Viper Wood Fired Oven Pizza is a food truck (or bus?) that often serves the western half of the Metro Valley. So, I was excited to catch them in Hurricane. The menu consists of a few standard pies: pepperoni, cheese, meat-lovers, etc. I opted for the margherita because I think it's simple enough to let the ingredients shine, but is not too basic to be boring. The crust was lightly crisp and the cheese may have caused a bit of sogging. But crispy + cheesy is a hard combo to beat.

Sweet Tooth Treats by Jessica was set up at a recent event with all kinds of delicious temptations - from cupcakes and brownies to cookies and fudge. I opted for the Butterbeer fudge, which was dotted with little marshmallows. Talk about a sugar bomb! I only wish it was a bit more solid; I think the heat got to it and made it a bit too melty. But fun flavors and perfect treat.
