Our first deep dish pizza experience came in the form of Lou Malnati's. There are a handful of major deep dish contenders in Chicago, and we were on a mission to try them all.
We arrived at this location around 5 p.m. or so, and there was a bit of a wait. The cool thing was, though, that we put our name on a list, and they estimated it could be up to an hour. And right after we put our name on the list, we could look over the menu and put in our order so they could get them in line. Deep dish pizzas take around 45 minutes to an hour to make, so having this sorted out on the front-end was super convenient.
My phone actually buzzed with a notification just 10 or 15 minutes into waiting that our table was ready. Score! We were led up to our table, and they confirmed our order - a small Malnati Chicago Classic with sausage, extra cheese, and tomato sauce. After the arduous wait, our pizza arrived, and the server quickly cut it into four pieces.
Very crisp crust, a delicious, flavorful sauce and like a layer of sausage. This was so good! It may have been a combination of walking 14 miles that day (literally, 14 miles) or the fact that it was my first deep dish or maybe because I was starving. But this just hit the spot. Yes, I love a New York-style slice, but this is something different. It's like a real meal. It's filling, heavy, and oh so delicious.
The 20th annual event was held on Saturday at the WVU Alumni Center. It cost $20 and the proceeds benefited the Caritas House. The event featured the dessert tasting competition, raffles, door prizes and auctions.
Heather and I found a table right across from Joel, who is my fellow foodie friend within University Relations and happens to bake at Rising Creek Bakery occasionally. Heather's friends April and Emily joined us, and we began making our rounds to the 13 (THIRTEEN!) different restaurant participants.
Foxfire Restaurant Salted caramel & walnut tart with an almond and walnut crust; triple chocolate mousse tart with a delicate chocolate crumb crust
I, of course, opted for the salted caramel tart, because lord knows I love me some caramel. And, this was certainly very caramel-y. It had sort of melted into this pool of caramel, which was a touch difficult to eat. But, I mean, you can't really go wrong with a pool of caramel. I had a taste of a friend's mousse tart, which wasn't bad. Rising Creek Bakery Orange almond financier, macerated Italian cherries, white chocolate custard mousse and almond crunch
This one won my vote - and not just because it's Joel's restaurant. Rather, because the flavors are so well composed and thought out to determine what complements what. The almond crunch was just perfect.
Apple Annie's Oreo cupcake
I expected something a bit more elaborate from Apple Annie's, because they have these mile-high pieces of pie and cake. But, a mini cupcake did the trick, too.
Tutto Gelato Strawberry shortcake gelato
This, of course, was delicious. How can you go wrong with gelato? You can't. Clearly, considering I scarfed this down before I had a chance to snag a photo. It was melting... or something...
OK QUICK BREAK. So. many. sweets. We decided to help ourselves to the heavy hors d'oeuvres buffet outside for some salty snacks. OK, back to it.
The Wine Bar at Vintner Valley Summer carrot cake with grenata
I'm OK with carrot cake; it's typically not my most favorite thing. But this one had some shredded zucchini in it, and it was ever so moist. Plus, it was the first time I had ever had grenata, which tasted like summer in a glass.
Hill & Hollow Caramelized banana tres leches cake with coconut macaroon
This little cake packed a punch of flavor. The caramelized banana on the bottom gave it some sweetness; and the macaroon on top was good enough all on its own. Morgantown Brewing Company Alpha Blonde buttermilk brownie with dulce de leche, vanilla bean whipped cream served with Alpha Blonde Ale; Coconut & almond crusted cheesecake with blood orange jelly, brookside saison caramel served with Brookside Farmhouse Saison
I went with the cheesecake, which had a good crust, and I was a fan of the jelly. The brownie was a bit dense for my taste. But, again, gotta give it to Brew Pub for always doing something creative -- and with beer, too.
Table 9 Peanut butter ice cream sandwich, strawberry, port; bacon-wrapped dates, ricotta, cinnamon
The Devils on Horseback are always always top notch for me. I love the sweet and salty. But, the peanut butter ice cream sandwich was very smart and very good. Table 9 was one of my favorites, and if it wasn't for Rising Creek, there's no doubt they would've been my #1.
The Cupcakerie Assorted cupcakes
I went with a mini strawberry cupcake; tasty, as usual.
Erickson Alumni Center Fried cheesecake with mango puree; warm toffee cake with ice cream
While the cheesecake was kinda tough to eat, I died over the warm toffee cake with ice cream. Definitely in my top favorites of the night. Warm, gooey and rich. So delicious.
Jameson's Cake pop
The chocolate cake pop was fairly run of the mill, but it sure looked cute.
Preston County Inn Make your own blueberry, strawberry, Belgian, or banana pecan waffle bar
First of all, these waffles were damn good. Perfectly crisp and golden brown, giving way to pillowy fluffy inside. An assortment of waffles, plus fresh toppings and local WV maple syrup made for a home run.
Dancing Fig Heaven & Hell cake
This is seven layers of devils food and angel food cake between layers of peanut butter mousse frosting. Tasty.
Also, shoutout to Northern Eagle Distributing for serving up a delicious rose. This is always a super fun event that benefits a great cause. If you didn't make it to this year's event, be sure to catch the next one.
Seating is first come, first served. So, we were there right at 11 a.m. when they opened, and we weren't alone. We were seated as soon as the restaurant opened, and it quickly filled with people - creating a loud, energetic atmosphere. There is also a long bar area for communal seating.
The menu is a little crazy - in the best way. Octopus terrine, "smears," cured meats, cheeses, turkey leg confit, pork jowl BLT and much more. Because these are small plates, we ordered a handful, which all come out depending on whenever they're done.
First up, salt-roasted beets with whipped goat cheese and pistachio vinaigrette. I really like beets, so this was a win for me. I like the light goat cheese and crunch of the pistachio. I do wish it was served more as maybe a side, so that I had something else to help mix up the flavor. It's a lot to eat on its own.
Then, we had the pig's ear with crispy kale, pickled cherry peppers and fried egg. We were instructed to mix it all together. And, once it was all mixed and you got a bite of everything, it was well-balanced. The fried with the crunchy and the savory egg, but those pickled peppers are really what pulled it all together. It needed that sweet, acidic piece. I wish I had more of those bites with a taste of everything.
Next out was my favorite: milk braised pork shoulder with mashed potatoes. I don't think I've ever had pork so tender in my life. It was divine. The mashed potatoes were pretty thin, but it almost made for this sort of soup-like experience - in an amazing way. So, so good.
And finally, the pork neckbone gravy with ricotta was delivered. I so wish this would have been delivered on the front-end of the meal because not only would it have been a godo balance for the beets, it's tough to follow that pork shoulder. This, however, was good. It wasn't at all what I was expecting when it said "gravy," but it was tasty, nonetheless. It tasted very familiar; a red sauce with pork that you could find in many Italian households. A utilitarian dish, even. But, tasty regardless.
I did like each of the dishes, but the only one that exceeded expectations was that pork shoulder, and it was very, very good. Otherwise, they were decent. If you visit, be sure to snag a seat early, as it gets packed. Grade: B
Chicago-style popcorn is a thing, and I got my first taste of it from popcorn legend Garrett Popcorn at the O'Hare Airport. But, that couldn't fully satisfy the bucket list item because, well, it's an airport. So, when I recently went to Chicago for a conference, Garrett Popcorn was one of my first destinations.
There are a bunch of Garrett Popcorn locations, and we just happened to hit the one nearest our hotel. There are a handful of flavors, and the Garrett Mix mixes the savory CheeseCorn and the sweet CaramelCrisp. Yes, please.
It's a fun combination of salty and sweet - how can you go wrong? It's not unlike the location at the airport - which is good. Both churned out tasty popcorn with the best of both worlds.
Mardi Gras Casino & Hotel often participates in food events, like Taste of All. So, it's always been in my peripheral, but never a direct destination. The casino is home to five different restaurants:
I recently went to The French Quarter Restaurant & Bar, and it was a pretty lovely experience. The restaurant is oddly open right to the rest of the casino and not lodged away in its own compartment. But, that was also kinda cool to see everything going on around us.
First up: Bread. Nothing too remarkable here, but it was warm.
Next was my entree: Pork Tenderloin - pork medallions, apricot and cherry mustarda and risotto. It was super dark inside, so it's tough to make out here, but there were a few tenderloins. I do think they could be a bit more tender, but I liked the savory and sweet sauce overall. And, there was a ton of risotto. Like, so, so much. I also like my risotto to sit up just a bit more, but the flavor was there.
We also got a side of macaroni and cheese because, hi, I'm 12. I think I spent the majority of my time digging my fork into this cheesy bed of pasta rather than my entree. It was a creamy cheese sauce with more melted cheese on top, and it was just a giant marriage of all the cheeses, and it was beautiful.
To finish it off, we had these little chocolate mints.
Overall, it was a good meal. And, the experience was even better.
