Located in the Suncrest Towne Centre, No. 1 Super Buffet is probably the newest Chinese restaurant in town. It's also quickly becoming one of the most popular. There is plenty of parking, and there are plenty of options.The dining area is very large, and there is even a private dining area that I assume is for reservations and parties. The dividers are primarily these plastic tubes with water in them that glow various colors. While it does look nifty, you can sometimes see the people on the opposite side of you because their reflection is shown in the tubes.


The buffet has about 7 or 8 rows of food, with a few rows along the wall that include American dishes, fresh sushi, and a salad bar. The sushi isn't the highest quality that you would expect from a place specializing in sushi, but it's okay. And, at least it's an option here. I don't think I've been to a Chinese buffet that has more options than this place. I'm not going to try to act like I know what I'm talking about here, because I don't. But I know that my favorites are all easily found - General Tso's chicken, crab/shrimp medley, sweet and sour chicken, beef and broccoli, crab legs, sugary donuts - the works. There is also fruit, cold dishes, and desserts.


If I want a Chinese buffet and don't mind taking in the amount of calories equivalent to an entire Thanksgiving dinner, this is the place I go. For around $12 per person, I don't think this value can be beat. I wish I could go on about the different types of cuisine, but frankly, I'm not qualified to speak on that matter. What I can say about this restaurant is the variety is outstanding. So, I'm sure there's something for everyone. In all the Chinese buffets I've been to, this seems to be the large conglomerate of every dish available. The typical Chinese buffet staples are all present here.



As with any Chinese buffet, the service is spotty, and the desserts are usually sub-par, but that didn't hurt my rating. My drink is always refilled when I need it, and dirty plates are taken away quickly. The check always comes with fortune cookies. I believe mine said something about if you never fail then you never really tried in the first place.

When I first moved to Morgantown, a friend a few years older than me told me she worked at the Boston Beanery. "Gross," I thought. "I hate baked beans." Since then, I've been to the Beanery more times than I can count. But it wasn't until recently that I realized I could blog about it - why? Because it's not a huge chain like I originally thought. I just assumed, as a freshman, I wasn't familiar with this chain. After all, there are two Boston Beaneries in Morgantown alone. I realized there are only a handful of restaurants, and it was actually started right here in Morgantown. Pretty cool.


The Boston Beanery isn't a bean place, though I believe they do have one bean sandwich. In essence, it's a sports bar with food. It's a pub. Morgantown has two locations - one on Evansdale in the plaza with Rite Aid and Pizza Hut on Patteson Drive; the other is along High Street. As you can imagine, the Evansdale location is a bit more laidback and easy to get to. The High Street location is usually if I'm just passing through and need a quick bite. Since the Beanery became smokefree, I've visited much more often. It used to be a cloud of smoke when you walked in.When you walk in, there's a long dining area and a bar area. There are TVs and memorabilia on the walls. Whenever you go in for a bite, you can always find some sport on TV.

There's a menu with a ton of beer to choose from, and the menu consists of typical American cuisine - burgers, salads, fried appetizers, steak and pasta.You already know what this place is gonna be like - the ingredients aren't the greatest, and the meal is just okay. I've never had something here that I've been dying to go back and try. On this particular day, my friend Dom and I split two appetizers: cheese quesadillas and boneless honey bbq chicken wings. I had a taste of the quesadilla, and it wasn't bad. The chicken was probably frozen bits, but it tasted fine. The boneless wings were pretty good. The white meat was decent quality, and the sauce was good. I would have preferred them cooked a little longer so the oustide had a little bite to it, because it was almost too soft. But they were definitely tasty.

For my main dish, I ordered the new smoked turkey wrap. This dish really had the ability to be quite good. Right now, though, it's bland. It consists of turkey, bacon, cheddar, lettuce and tomato on a spinach wrap - yum! But it's supposed to include honey mustard. That sauce is key to this dish - that's what gives it the flavor. Unfortunately, without that tang, the wrap just falls flat. I ended up dipping mine in a little bit of ketchup just for some flavor. Their sandwiches and burgers all come with curly fries, which are always tasty. I like to dip mine in ranch, just for something different. Maybe next time I'll ask for extra honey mustard. But, it's what you'd expect from a place like this. And I've had other dishes that are all about in the same area - around average.

I remember when Yesterday's first opened, a few years ago. I was the copy desk chief at The Daily Athenaeum, and my copy editor told me about the new restaurant her father and a friend opened. It turns out to be Yesterday's, and it turned out to be a hit. I've had Yesterday's a dozen or so times the past few years, but I sat down with Melanie to have a good all-around meal recently.



Yesterday's is located in the Northpointe Plaza at the end of the Mileground. Thankfully, there is plenty of parking. It's a nicer casual restaurant, but not stuffy at all. It's a comfortable, classy restaurant. When you walk in, there is a good-sized bar to the left and a few dining areas, as well as an outside dining area complete with fireplace for the winter. The ceiling had colorful cloth kites hanging from the rafters, and dark wood and lighting give the restaurant a sense of home.


We browsed the drink menus first, and I decided on a strawberry lemonade, and Melanie ordered a blackberry drink. Mine was spot-on, and not too strong. Melanie's was a little stronger, but it was still sweet. We were happy with our decisions. Next, it was onto the food menu.

Melanie and I put in an order of "Chicken and Cheese Relleno" for our appetizer. This delicious dish boasted a roasted poblano pepper stuffed with chicken, goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, jack and chedder cheese and pico de gallo. It came out as one giant piece, so it was a bit difficult to eat. If you're not comfortable with your date, it might not be the best to order. But the dish was excellent. It's a really hearty dish, with tons of goat cheese and chicken and tomatoes. The herbs and flavors blended together seamlessly, and the textures were perfect. I was very pleasantly surprised with this appetizer.


For my entree, I couldnt take my eyes away from the lobster macaroni and cheese. For whatever reason, it stood out to me on the menu. The $20 pricetag was a little hard to manage, but it was a brand-new dish on the menu, and I finally gave in.When it  came out, I was a little confused. First of all, the entire top was covering in a cracker-type of coating. And it was in a cast-iron skillet that was fairly shallow. I began to second-guess my decision to spend this much money. The noodles were penne. Though it wasn't a huge portion, it was enough to fill me for dinner and even have a small box to take a little home. If my appetite was a little stronger that evening, it wouldn't have been enough.

But, the creamy sauce was outstanding, and the lobster was delicious. It wasn't small, imitation pieces - it was very good. The coating was too much for me. If it had been baked so it was more soft, that would have been better, but the dry crackers on top were a little overwhelming, and it's difficult to not inhale them. But for all that, it was worth it. The dish was very tasty. The creamy sauce was perfect with the noodles, and this comfort food with a touch of sophistication really is a pleasant experience. Though a few tweaks would have made this dish one of the top all time in Morgantown, I can't deny the quality and the flavors. Compared to other restaurants, Yesterday's is definitely toward the top of my list. I've had numerous meals here, and I've never been disappointed.

Brand new restaurant Careyes was on my list for Friday. Located in the Wharf District, near Subway and Oliverio's, the restaurant features Tex-Mex. This location has had a handful of restaurants, including Synergy Chophouse and Saloon and Mon River Chophouse. I had a meeting at the restaurant once, but I was never able to dine. It had switched hands so often and closed for certain hours, so I was never able to get there. Finally, on Friday, Kaitlynn and I were able to get inside and have lunch.

It's easy to find, as it's right along Clay Street, but with many Morgantown restaurants, parking is limited. Most areas threaten towing, but we took our chances and parked in a gravel lot. The restaurant is risen up, and there are a half-dozen stairs to climb before reaching the door. The outside looks like a typical saloon-style restaurant, and the interior is wide and open. The old, hardwood floors creak underneath you and exposed wooden support beams scattered the dining area. Dozens of brightly colored tables lined the area, some adorned with cacti and carious southern landscapes. The exposed brick walls had old framed photos. A large bar was near our dining area, which is essentially in three parts, and there was an outdoor dining area, as well.



When we sat at our booth, the first thing I noticed was the salt and pepper were in Corona bottles, which is kind of clever. We were handed our menus, made of flimsy paper, and put our drink orders in. We quickly decided on two appetizers: crab cakes and shrimp ceviche. Under appetizers on the menu, it listed two crabcakes for $10. I thought, "Perfect! We can both have one!" I thought wrong - when the waitress brought out our appetizers, quite quickly, there was only one crab cake on the plate. Confused, I asked the waitress if there was supposed to be two. She quickly shot me down by saying "No. Only the entree has two." I was confused, so I looked back at the menu where it still said under appetizers, two crabcakes. I didn't want to cause a scene, so I let it go. I just hoped that it wouldn't be charged at the same amount for less food. The waitress dismissing my concern so quickly, however, left a bad taste in my mouth.

The crab cake with Southwestern remoulade sauce was very, very tasty. It was my favorite dish of the night. The crab cake had large chunks of lump crabmeat and the sauce added that punch. The shrimp ceviche left something to be desired. With only two, maybe three, chunks of shrimp, and tomato, cucumber, peppers, red onion, avocado and cilantro in lime and orange juices, I couldn't taste much beyond the lime and cilantro. In fact, it was a pretty little salad of different textures of lime and cilantro. Unfortunate, because I was looking forward to a light, refreshing dish, and the crispy chips it was served with were delightful.


Our entrees came out next. Quickly quickly, in fact. I ordered the Santa Fe Grilled Chicken Sandwich. The sandwich came with three large slices of avocado, pico de gallo, romaine lettuce and spicy mayo on a grilled sourdough Texas toast. I'm a big fan of tomato, so I also asked to have some on the side. Kaitlynn ordered the same sandwich, only without the addition. It came with a side - I opted for the jalapeno cheddar grits and Kaitlynn got black beans.When our dishes came out, mine had tomatoes on the side, and hers had tomato on the sandwich. they were prepared, too, chopped with spices. So, either the menu left off tomatoes, or chef incorrectly added tomatoes to Kaitlynn's sandwich. Either way, I was most unhappy after the crabcake incident and now the tomato question. I don't like to be fussy at restaurants - I know that industry is difficult. So I didn't want to come off as requesting tomatoes on the side because I couldn't pick them off my own sandwich if they were supposed to come that way.

Anyway, the sandwich was fine. I wasn't thrilled or disappointed. The flavors didn't wow me. The grits were interesting. I'm not sure if I had ever had grits before, but they were basically a less creamy version of mashed potatoes. I liked them, though I feel those flavors could have been kicked up a notch as well. Kaitlynn was unimpressed with her black beans.

For dessert, hoping the meal would perk up, I ordered creme brulee. It came out cold and was mediocre. Nothing about this restaurant stood out to me, and I was quite unhappy with the small bumps with the service - though I know that happens with new restaurants, so it doesn't weigh too heavily into my grading scale. I might go back and try it once they're up and running better, but it's just not worth the effort to go to the Wharf Distrcit and deal with subpar service. Luckily, the owner or manager seemed very nice and involved and made sure our drinks were filled when the waitress was busy, so it might have a fighting chance. We'll see.

Unfortunately, when I got my check, I was charged the full amount, $10, for only one crabcake, despite the menu saying I should get two. The only delicious part of the meal was tainted.

I, along with my co-worker Danielle, hit up Varsity Club on Friday, also her birthday. We had tried to go here a few days ago when the power was out, so we decided today would be the day. Unfortunately, we picked a day when the Morgantown weather gods decided to also torrential downpour, so outside pictures were nearly impossible.

Varsity Club is located on Don Nehlen Drive, right across from the stadium and very close to Chateau Royale. I'm not usually on that side of town, so I had never visited Varsity Club before. It's situated on a small hill, and the parking lot is tiny. So tiny, in fact, that all the spots were taken up when we tried to go, so we parked illegally in a fire lane. No ticket/towing though, thank goodness. But there's a large oval sign out front that signals you're there.

When you first walk in, the dining area doesn't look too large, but there's another area behind the bar. There are frames of various sports memorabilia plastered across the wall. The bar sticks out like a peninsula, so there's an area in front, to the left and behind. As soon as we set foot inside, a waitress told us to sit anywhere we liked. That made me feel instantly comfortable - new place, but I didn't have to stand up wondering what to do for a minute. We walked around to the back, because there was a little bit more room. Our waitress noticed the table was a little close to the one next to ours and told us we can shimmy it over. Perfect - she was really paying attention and wanted to make us feel comfortable, which she did very well. She took our drink orders, then we picked up the menus already located on the table and searched.

I had been perusing their menu all morning, so I had a good idea of what I wanted: the pulled pork sandwich. It had hickory smoked pork, varsity slaw, hushpuppies, chips and slaw. She asked if I wanted fries, and I said sure. After Danielle ordered her quesadilla, the waitress asked if we'd like to just share a basket for about a dollar more, and we took her up on it. Shortly thereafter, she brought out a "sauce" carrier. In the form of a plastic 6-pack of beer bottles, this little carrier instead housed six different types of BBQ sauce. I get to choose my own sauce to put on my sandwich? I can try all of them to see which one I like best? Perfect. Major points.

Our dishes came out fairly quickly. A large basket of seasoned fries was situated between Danielle and I. The fries were medium-width, so a decent amount of potato inside. I prefer a bit crunchier french fry. My sandwich was piled high with pork on a warm bun. The pork was tender and plentiful. A heaping handful of chips accompanied my sandwich - plain, greasy ones. I also had three hushpuppies that were absolutely excellent. Crispy outside and moist and well-seasoned inside. I only wish there were more on the plate. I also had a condiment container full of slaw. It wasn't mayonnaise-based, but it was very good nonetheless. I never had a slaw like that - it was cold and moist, but I would almost say it was a water-based, rather than mayo. It tasted the same, only fresher and lighter.

I tried all the sauces out with fries. The Memphis Sweet BBQ was fairly sweet for my taste, but still good. I also liked the Golden Carolina BBQ and used it for a good bit of my fries. My favorite, however, was their very own house sauce, VBQ. It had a hint of buffalo sauce, but it was a nice combination between the sweet and tangy without relying too heavily on one or the other. I really liked all of the sauces, and I would have been happy if any were on my sandwich. But I couldn't finish my whole sandwich and opted to drizzle some VBQ on the rest of it. When I asked for a to-go box, the waitress was nice enough to ask if I'd like a container to take a sauce with me, as well. The waitress was great.

At the heart of it, this is a sports bar. It's a great location for those going to the football games, but it's not fine dining. The typical dishes are pizza, sandwiches, wings and some seafood. If you want a good, greasy meal after or before a day of drinking, this is the place. The food is exceptional for many sports bars, and I wouldn't mind going back.
