For the next issue of Savor WV Magazine, I'll have a profile on Muriale's Italian Restaurant. So, for the first time ever (I know!), I headed on out to Fairmont to get a first-hand look at this restaurant and all the buzz that surrounds it.
I've had so many people tell me how fantastic this place is. And from people whose opinions I value, too. It's just that it's in Fairmont, and I'm never in Fairmont, and it's hard for me to justify a trip all the way out there for just a restaurant then to turn back around and come home. But I totally did it. And it was totally worth it.

There's a real sense of community, of family here. From the old-school photos hung on the walls to the friendliness of the staff, they've got something special going on here. And it's not the tacky, fake plant kind of "Italian" places that pop up too often. It's real, it's genuine, and it's loving. After I spoke with Rocco for quite a bit, he had his staff make some dishes for me to photograph - the spaghetti, lasagna and meatball casserole. After I took my photos, I thought I was on my way. No, no. Rocco had something else up his sleeve. When I wasn't around, he had his staff box up the lasagna, fill a large container full of meatballs and bag up a whole loaf of bread for me to take home.
The meatballs, too, are out of this world. Flavors of garlic, breadcrumbs and Italian seasonings are prevalent. Coated in their hearty red sauce, the meatballs are a meal all in their own. I make tons of little meatball hoagies with their fresh bread and the giant meatballs.
I wish I had a chance to try their desserts - because the dessert tray looked heavenly. There will definitely be a next time. This has got to be one of the best restaurants in the state. If you haven't tried it, you're doing yourself a disservice. I honestly can't wait for the next opportunity to go. This would be one of those few restaurants, that if I could, I would go higher than an A. The food is phenomenal, the service was exceptional - I can't find anything about this place that isn't amazing. Except that it's not in my backyard.

Muriale's is a good Italian restaurant. Dining overlooking the river is nice on the deck out back is Fairmont's best ambiance as well. You're going to hear mixed reviews on the owner though. I've heard many things, and some not so good. As I don't know him personally, and not being a Fairmont native, I'm not going to repeat anything here.
ReplyDeleteI will have to say though, I find Muriale's is a bit over-hyped. But it's Fairmont, and it used to be that you couldn't be picky when it came to great eats.
Personally, I think the quality and service of the Aquarium Lounge blows Muriale's away. It's a hole in the wall, small, and pricey, but oh oh oh so good.
Plus Fairmont has so many other decent options now, which has been nice to see since I moved down here. River City Grill, Chancey's, Mi Pueblo in Traction Square, Classic's downtown (lunch and cash only cafe), C.J. Maggies (huge menu, but just average taste in my book, but a beautiful restaurant), Pufferbellies (Great ice cream, but surprisingly good food too, and the Shrimp and Crab chowder is quite yummy); Pokey Dot (I used to a negative critic, but have a 4 year old now, and the food has greatly improved to being very good sometimes).
Those are our regulars. There are some others of note, but I don't frequent them. The above list gives me enough to choose from, and I'm on the road a lot for work and family so I eat out too much as it it. As you may note, I avoid corporate franchise establishments. I like to shop and eat locally owned places. Cheers.
I can see there being mixed reviews. He's a stern guy. I think it's one of those - "You want to be on his good side" kind of deals.
DeleteCJ Maggies is one of the places I've been wanting to interview. I went there once - the menu was crazy huge. And I had a good salad, but I need to head back so I can review it. And I've been to the Pokey Dot - I really liked it, too.
But now you've given me even MORE places I must dine at. Thank you, though. I am clueless when it comes to Fairmont, so that gives me a good place to start. I definitely agree with avoiding franchises. I like to try something unique and put my money back into the community.
