Starvin' Arvin's is a restaurant on the West End of Huntington that features comfort food in a fast environment.

Think spaghetti with meat sauce, pot roast with vegetables, open faced roast beef sandwich -- all at a place with a pick-up window. Is this a dream?

I enjoyed chicken & dumplings - hand-pulled rotisserie chicken immersed in a rich, savory chicken gravy with fluffy dumplings for a comforting, homestyle meal. Soul satisfying.

Mac & cheese - this was okay. A little bland for me. Give me some more flavor.

Meatloaf - a classic blend of seasoned ground beef and pork, baked to a savory finish and topped with a sweet and tangy glaze. Nostalgic favorite for me.

All washed down with a fresh strawberry lemonade, which hit the spot. Delicious.

The Grill on Third is a steakhouse in Huntington that opened in the last year or so.

They offer brunch, soups, salads, handhelds, pasta, chicken, seafood and, of course, steak.

I started with the "Cremini-Boursin Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms" basted in herb-garlic butter and topped with toasted panko breadcrumbs. Give me a juicy mushroom stuffed with cheese any day.

Next was Steak Diane - prime angus sirloin medallions with brandy cream reduction, cremini mushrooms, caramlized onions and served with brussel sprouts with bacon, caramelized onions and balsamic reduction. Plus a side of fresb herb creamy risotto with shaved parmesan. Because it was a to-go order, it's not the most beautiful presentation. But it was very flavorful.

I visited Stellar Noodle Co. in their final days open in Huntington.

The turquoise shaded building was only one of a few ramen shops in the area, so I wanted to be sure to check it out.

I ordered the Tonkotsu - Char Siu Pork. Traditional Pork Bone Broth. Ramen. Carrot. Bean Sprout. Cabbage. Ajitsuke Egg. Fish Cake. Nori. Scallion. My favorite part of this was the egg because it had so much flavor. I wish the noodles were a bit softer and absorbed some of that broth.

I also had the belly bao - which had those nice pillowy buns and thick pieces of pork belly. Decent pork flavor. I appreciated the fresh cabbage and sauce on top.

Smoothie King is a chain, but only has two locations in West Virginia: Morgantown and now Huntington.

Whether you're interested in energy or weight loss or flavor, there's a variety of smoothies to enjoy. I liked the "Kindness in a Cup," which had Strawberries, Bananas, Mangoes, Apple Pineapple Juice Blend, Turbinado, Dairy Whey Blend. It is sweet but light and oh so tasty. Pick-up took a few minutes but the result was worth it.

“The entire community is filled with negativity. Being an African American company, this is what we deal with on a regular basis. We are not the other color, which is unfortunate to you guys, because if we were the other color, I’m sure there would be a lot more respect," Kurt says in the video.
That created some backlash on social and led to Kurt and co-owner Brittany going on the "Talk Huntington” podcast led by host David Williams, also known as "Alligator Jackson," where they doubled down on their stance - claiming Kurt was not calling Huntington racist but was instead saying his own African-American community isn't supporting the restaurant, defending their decision to not serve ketchup by calling it sugar and tomatoes, as well as their decision to not accept cash.
The fries, however, were thick and soggy and had no seasoning. They may have benefited from that box had they not been sitting in the bag for too long, which kept the air still inside. I also had the Fruity Pebble waffles, which, too, ended up too soggy for me. But I did like the flavor of the waffle. Even without the syrup and cereal, the batter itself was slightly sweet.
So, there is a lot to digest here. And, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and how that affects where you do or do not dine. But if we are talking food alone, then I give it a ...

Huntington is very good at confusing me with its Tex-Mex restaurants. There is El Ranchito, which I've never been to. And there is also Ranchito Bar & Grill, which I recently visited.

This particular restaurant has a bright, fun interior and quite a few interesting menu items - like taco de lengua, or steamed beef tongue. While I didn't go in that direction, I did order a few different things to sample.

I was excited to see Elote Mexicano - A traditional Mexican street food: A corn on the cob smothered in mayonnaise, grated cheese and chili powder. If you add mayo to anything, it's usually better.

But I also got the Esquites - Smoky, sweet, spicy and tangy esquites are the off-the cob version of elotes with mayonnaise, grated cheese, chili powder and a dash of lime. All the flavor, none of the mess.

I tried a single taco al pastor - grilled pork with pineapple & homemade marinated salsa. The salty/sweet combo is always a win for me.

Finally, we split some TAQUITOS MEXICANOS - Two beef and two chicken taquitos deep fried and topped with cheese dip. These ended up not being as crisp as I had hoped, but I'm always down to dip something in cheese dip.

I liked the variety here and some of the more unique offerings. I would like some even more punched up flavor. But, solid meal.

I think I've been to about 100 Rio Grande restaurants in my lifetime so let's add one more in Huntington. I kid, but it is a pretty common name for Mexican-American restaurants, and I distinguish this Rio Grande by noting that it is on 5th Avenue.

I placed a take-out order for lunch, which included chips and salsa, and the enchiladas suizas, which came with grilled chicken, tomatillo sauce and queso.

It wasn't really a looker of a plate, but that could be in part because it was to go. it seemed pretty on par with other Mexican-American restaurants in the region. Salsa was thin, but I enjoyed the flavor, even though it could use a bit more spice. The texture of the enchiladas in the sauce left something to be desired, but they were full of grilled chicken that was seasoned well and it's hard to beat the cheese dip.

Carnival food at restaurants seems to be a popular trend lately. There was a Charleston restaurant that opened recently serving this kind of fare, and now Huntington has its own local establishment: Carnival Food Place.

They have all the good stuff: funnel cakes, cotton candy, deep-fried Oreo cookies and other carnival snacks like hot dogs, corn dogs, chili cheese fries and boneless BBQ wings.

The deep-fried Snickers bar was sinfully enticing so I put in an order for that as well as a cheeseburger because life is all about balance, right?

It's hard to say anything bad about a deep fried Snickers. truthfully, I'm not sure that the breading adds a whole lot, but it being warm and gooey makes it even more delicious. it sure was messy and a little misshapen so it's not visually perfect but your taste buds will tell you otherwise. The burger was average. It did not have a ton of flavor or texture. I prefer a hand-pattied, fresh, juicy burger. When I went, though, they were still working out some kinks, so I'd be curious to see how things have changed since.

Wild & Wonderful BBQ is a food truck that doles out pulled pork, smoked bologna & sausage, and brisket sandwiches in addition to a bevy of sides.

Based in Huntington, the truck can be found at events locally. I visited them to get my hands on some grub. First things first, I ordered the Mountaineer Cheesesteak with pork, sautéed peppers, and cheese on a hoagie roll. I liked this well enough, but I wish the cheese was cheesing more. I think the cheese sauce was a bit too thin, so it didn't lightly melt. It kinda got soaked up. I did enjoy the twist with the pork though; it added a nice flavor.

And while it might not be the most appealing visually, the smoked scalloped potatoes were pretty good. Scalloped potatoes are one of my preferred mediums of potato and, to have them cheesy and smoked, that took it up a notch.

Because the nature of the restaurant, the menu can change bit by bit. What have you had here? What's been your favorite?
