Clendenin has a few little hidden gems that I've had on my to-try list for some time. And, recently, I was able to mark a few off - like Savor the Flavor. 



This bakery recently expanded its space, and I would guess its offerings, too!



They really have a wide variety to choose from. 



Think: donuts, cream horns, apple turnovers, breads, pepperoni rolls, cinnamon rolls - and even sandwiches!



So, I needed to try a few things. Let's start with a pepperoni roll. 



This was a pretty large roll, with a an air pocket in the middle, but the bread was the perfect depth so it didn't get too dry but got all those tasty spices soaked in the bread.



We each have our pepperoni roll preferences! 



Then, I tried the brownie. This giant brownie was a tad on the dry side and had chocolate chips - which most people would love.



But my fav is those corners that are crispy around the edges and fudgey in the middle! 



Also, I tried the chicken salad "cone-wich," which was in this really cool breaded cone thingy. It made for the perfectly portable snack. 



Finally - the flavor stack. This was my favorite. There's something special about a really solid sandwich. This had a variety of lunchmeat, cheeses, lettuce, tomato and mayo. It was all fresh, varied in texture and stacked high, for sure.

I really love the Capitol Market during any season. But it truly shines during the fall. And since fall is winding down, I figured I need to share my love before the season is over.

It's getting cooler outside, which means food trucks will be few and far between. But I managed to make a trip to Winfield to check out Jimmy Krack Korn. 



Their main draw may be their kettle corn or pork rinds, but they also have a whole menu of sandwiches.



When I saw "homemade meatloaf sandwich," I was instantly sold. It's one of those comfort foods for me that I also just think is delicious if done right. Right, in my mind, is with a sweeter tomato sauce, super moist with onions and breading and just *chef's kiss* delicious. 



I watched as the cook took two slices of bread, buttered them and put them on the griddle. While the bread got all buttery and toasty, a slice of meatloaf sizzled on the griddle as a piece of cheese gently melted overtop. 



The result? A hot, cheesy, messy meatloaf sandwich that was both comforting and satisfying.

Bologna for me growing up meant three things: Kraft American singles, white bread and mayo.

 If you’ve been “bologna sandwich broke,” you are probably also all too familiar with this combo and may have since phased it out of your lunch repertoire. Many can’t get over the smooth, floppy texture. Or, the sandwich may simply be reminiscent of tougher economic times.

But as an adult, I’m rediscovering this pink lunchmeat in the form of fried bologna, hot bologna sandwiches, pickled bologna and maybe even risotto. And, I’m not alone. New York City-based Momofuku founder David Chang has said bologna could be the next big “thing.”

“It’s a blank canvas of pureed meat, ready for inspiration to take hold. You can make it from duck, veal, chicken, pork, beef, and a variety of game. You can smoke it, use different spices, change just about anything about it,” he wrote in GQ Magazine.

“The problem right now is that there is no such thing as artisanal bologna. This blows my mind — we have craft doughnuts, beet pickles, beef jerky ... but no bologna? This needs to change. ... And the next time you visit your favorite restaurant, tell the chef to stop making tiny batches of that Italian stuff and start experimenting with great American bologna. Do that and it’s only a matter of time till bologna starts bumping pork belly off menus all over town.”

Bologna, like many beloved foods in Appalachia, is a product of immigration. It is derived from the Italian sausage mortadella, a fatty pork sausage, which has popular in the city of Bologna since the 15th century. It likely made its way to North America via German immigrants in areas like the Midwest, Pennsylvania and Appalachia, according to Eater.com.

Bologna is made from discarded or fatty parts of meat that are ground into sausages and cured like mortadella. It can contain garlic or other spices. It is cheap, keeps well and is easily produced — which made it readily accessible to those across the country.

Those characteristics allowed bologna to become a mainstay throughout Appalachia. But in true Appalachian fashion, there’s a twist — whether that is the toppings, how the bologna itself is prepared or traditions involving the lunchmeat.

You’ll find bologna on biscuit sandwiches at Tudor’s Biscuit World. You’ll find fried bologna sandwiches topped with a spicy BBQ sauce at bars. You’ll find it in pickled ropes in local country store jars.

These takes on American bologna showcase the resourcefulness and ingenuity of Appalachians. With some culinary magic, bologna is delicious — and can even last much longer with pickling. So if you’ve strayed from the quintessential American lunchmeat, it may be time to reunite. Just try it in one of the classic Appalachian ways.

Big Marv's Kitchen & Grill is a food stand featuring home cooking that switches up locations around Charleston. I had only recently learned of this business from a Black-owned WV business owner list. So, I was really excited when I found them out and about.



They had a list of a few specials, but what caught my eye was the whiting fish special. I really love a good fish sandwich. It reminds me of when my dad and I used to get a fish special every Friday growing up. So, I went with the whiting sandwich with chips and broccoli.



This is a huge sandwich, and it has a thick coating. I tend to like mine without quite as much breading, but it was good. I added some tartar sauce and called it a day.
