Dining on I-79, US-19

By Candace Nelson - 8:00 AM

I drive down the middle of the state a good bit. So, I see a ton of places along I-79 and US-19 that I want to try. Sometimes Chris and I make the drive together, so I'll start crossing some of these off my list soon. Hopefully.

  1. Tamarack's food is pretty good. It used to be run by The Greenbrier's chefs. Not sure if it still is or not, but the food has always been good, and decent portions and prices. Upscale, near fine dining quality food. I think last time there I got a 4oz broiled salmon filet, whole green beans, and seasoned red potatoes with a drink for under $10.

The Waffle Hut wasn't bad either. Pretty much locally owned IHOP quality.

Can't help you on the Oasis or Dirty Earnies. I actually thought the Oasis was a porn store. Kinda had that look.

The 79er is very forgettable. Below to average diner food. Not as good as the Jane Lew truck stop, and that's not impressive either.

DJ's diner was pretty good the one time we tried it, but that was about 8 years ago. Not sure if it's maintained quality, gotten worse or better. I seem to recall it was about a solid "B."

    1. That's what I've heard of Tamarack - I don't know if I'd be able to go to the Greenbrier ($$$), so Tamarack may be the next best thing.

I think Oasis is a porn store + food. So, I don't know if I'll have the courage to actually eat there - BUT it is an interesting concept. And Dirty Ernie's is on that last of the unique places to try in WV, so I'm interested.

Any others you can think of off the top of your head?

  2. Waffle Hut had good food but the service was a disaster. You should ask Bitmapped about his feelings on the Hut, haha.

    1. I think I've heard his opinions on it before, haha. I still would like to give it a try. Unfortunately, I don't know how often I'll be traveling that way now .... =/
