Morning Glory is a breakfast and brunch restaurant in San Diego’s Little Italy, located in the Piazza della Famiglia, and it has earned a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand for its globally influenced take on breakfast and its playful, over-the-top dining room.
The restaurant is hard to miss, with a maximalist interior filled with pink and green marble, plush seating, bold lighting and a giant flower installation that fits the anything-but-basic approach to brunch.
First up was the "Caramel Hot Chocolate" with Valrhona Caramelia 36% milk chocolate, milk and caramel sauce. I felt like I was in Wonderland and hot chocolate for breakfast seem very apropos.
For my meal, I started with the soufflé pancakes: "Japan's answer to the age-old question, "How do I get more food-shaped air in my diet?" These are our biggest culinary flex and in full transparency, they only come out perfect 8 our of 10 times. They're unpredictable so we send them to your table whenever they're ready, not sooner, not later." The Japanese-style pancakes are tall, impossibly light and airy, with a soft, almost custardy center that makes them feel more like a dessert than a traditional stack of pancakes. They come with butter, uncut pure maple syrup and whipped cream. Which is delicious, delicious and delicious.
Just look how jiggly.
Imagine a cloud. Imagine eating a cloud. Imagine it covered in sugar.
Next up was "Turkish Eggs," which have garlic herb greek yogurt, poached eggs, roasted cherry tomatoes, chili garlic oil, dill and mint. Plus olive oil toasted levain bread.
The yogurt brings a cool, tangy base to the dish, while the runny yolks and chili-garlic oil make it rich, savory and slightly spicy, with the herbs adding freshness.
The toasted levain is there for good reason, giving you something to drag through the yogurt, egg yolk and oil and making sure none of the best parts stay on the plate. The two dishes were almost opposites — one sweet, airy and delicate, the other garlicky, creamy and spicy — which is a pretty good representation of the range Morning Glory brings to the breakfast table.
